Effects of Learning Chinese language and TCM on Memory, Cognition, and Neuroplasticity
There is vast scientific literature showing measurable benefits of learning Chinese language and traditional Chinese medicine (TCM).
This socio-descriptive research collected data from the major scientific databases e.g.: Scopus, Google Scholar, PubMed, Cochrane library and ScienceDirect in the period from 2015 to 2025. It has been identified numerous functional benefits of learning Chinese:
Cognitive changes with specific effects (e.g., attention, working memory, auditory processing). Auditory pitch processing and phonological accuracy. Visual-orthographic processing (character learning) – "I see, I disassemble, I recognize" Integration of "handwriting" and motor skills and character memory. Existance ofphenomenon of "cultural frame switching": language and context can temporarily activate different cultural patterns of thinking/responding (e.g. individualistic vs. collectivist "frames").
Proven positive effects of learning TCM: Developing clinical reasoning and systems thinking. Increased interoceptive and somatic attention. Development of cognitive flexibility with easier switching between biomedical and functional models, less rigidity in diagnostics, greater resistance to "fixation error". Better memory strategies, cognitive flexibility and greater interoception - attention with developed empathy and communication.
